reminiscing part 1

When I was in Japan, I barely listened to music for the first five months. How did I do that, you ask. Well, I thought I wasn't much of a music person in the first place. And second, I had no cds with me. CDs there cost around 2,000-5,000 yen apiece. And the FM stations were all Japanese. When they did play American music, it was always the oldies.

So when my sister sent a CD filled with music Claudine, Verna and I thereafter dubbed "Japan Songs" and Claudine bought a John Mayer (sigh--there's just something about the voice), I resurrected the music I thought I didn't need. I was almost driven crazy by the silence, by the way.

So since a little reminiscing is in order, here's a favorite John Mayer song. Whenever I hear this, I remember walking from my dormitory to the Seya or Mitsukyo station 20 minutes away, in the middle of winter, with my jacket on and HIS voice in my head, Christmas without family, and the kind of cold that clears my head and makes me feel lonely at the same time.

I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
but she's just like a maze
Where all of the walls all continually change

And I've done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hand
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe it’s got nothing to do with me

Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Ooh, you see that skin?
It's the same she's been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she's left
cleaning up the mess he made

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Boys, you can break
You find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without warmth from
A woman's good, good heart

On behalf of every man
looking out for every girl
You are the god and the weight of her world

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
So mothers be good to your daughters, too.
